What is a throuple?

A throuple is a committed romantic relationship between three people. The word is a blend of 'three' and 'couple'. In the strictest sense all three partners are romantically involved with each other, though the term is also used loosely for any three-person arrangement.

The shapes three people can take

Not every three-person arrangement is a throuple, and the distinctions are worth having because they describe genuinely different commitments.

StructureWho is involved with whom
Triad / throupleAll three are involved with each other
VeeOne person is involved with two others, who are not involved with each other
QuadFour people, usually two couples, all connected
ThreesomeA sexual encounter, not a relationship structure

The 'vee' is far more common than people expect, and a great many relationships described as throuples are structurally vees — which matters mainly because it changes who needs to be at which conversation.

Where the word came from

'Throuple' is recent, appearing in English around 2010 and spreading rapidly through the 2010s via lifestyle journalism and reality television. It is a portmanteau of the plainest kind. The older and more precise term is triad, which polyamorous communities had been using for decades before the newer word arrived, and which many still prefer on the grounds that 'throuple' sounds like a novelty.

The asymmetry problem

The most-cited difficulty in three-person relationships is structural rather than emotional. When a throuple forms out of an existing couple, the couple arrives with shared history, shared money, often a shared home, and an established way of settling disagreements. The third person arrives with none of that.

Communities have a shorthand for the failure mode: couple's privilege, meaning the unspoken assumption that the original pair's relationship takes precedence when something has to give. The arrangements that work tend to have addressed this explicitly and early, rather than discovering it during the first real conflict.

The question that surfaces it. If the three of you disagree about something significant, does it get decided two against one? If the honest answer is yes, the relationship is a couple with an attachment, and calling it a throuple will not change how it feels to the third person.

The practical business

Three-person households run into a set of legal problems couples do not, because almost all legal machinery for relationships assumes exactly two people. Property ownership, tenancy agreements, inheritance, next-of-kin rights, parental responsibility and immigration all default to pairs. Some of this can be handled with wills, cohabitation agreements and powers of attorney; some of it cannot be handled at all. Anyone building a life in a triad should take actual legal advice rather than assume it will work out.

How it relates to everything else here

A throuple is a relationship structure, not a kink. It sits some distance from hotwifing or cuckolding, which describe arrangements within a couple rather than a relationship between three people. What they share is a dependence on compersion and on the same unglamorous discipline: saying the thing out loud before it becomes a problem.

Common questions

Is a throuple the same as polyamory?

A throuple is one shape polyamory can take, not a synonym for it. Polyamory describes the broader practice of having multiple romantic relationships with everyone's knowledge. A throuple is specifically three people in one relationship together, which is sometimes called a triad.

What is the difference between a throuple and a threesome?

A threesome is a sexual encounter between three people, usually one-off. A throuple is a relationship — ongoing, romantic, and typically involving the same commitments any couple would recognise. The confusion between the two causes real friction when someone proposes one and means the other.

Can three people get married?

No jurisdiction currently recognises a three-person marriage. Some US cities — Somerville and Cambridge in Massachusetts, and Arlington in Virginia — have passed ordinances recognising multi-partner domestic partnerships for limited purposes such as hospital visitation, but these are not marriage and confer far fewer rights.

Do throuples last?

Some do and some don't, as with any relationship structure. The commonly cited difficulty is not jealousy but asymmetry — a triad formed when an existing couple adds a third often struggles if the third has less standing, less say, or is treated as an accessory to the original pair.

What is a unicorn?

A single person, most often a bisexual woman, sought by an existing couple to join them. The word is faintly sardonic: it refers to how rarely such a person exists on the couple's exact terms. 'Unicorn hunting' is used critically for couples who search for a third to serve their relationship rather than to be an equal partner in a new one.
